An ideal customer profile (ICP) describes the kind of company that gets the most value from what you sell and is most likely to buy. In cold email it decides who goes on the list, which matters more than any subject line.
What goes into one
- Firmographics: industry, company size, location, revenue, growth stage. See firmographics.
- The problem: what they struggle with that you solve, and how you'd spot it from the outside.
- The buyer: which role feels the problem and can say yes. See buyer persona.
- Signals: things that show they need you now, such as hiring for a role, raising money or launching a product.
How to write yours
Start from your best existing customers: who got results fastest, paid without haggling and stayed. Look for what they share. Then write it as a filter you could hand to someone building a list.
Why it pays off in cold email
A narrow ICP lets you write one email that speaks to everyone on the list. Broad lists get generic emails, fewer replies and more spam complaints.
