A BDR (business development representative) focuses on outbound prospecting: finding companies that haven't shown interest yet, contacting them, and turning a few into qualified meetings.
What sets the role apart
Where an SDR often handles inbound leads too, a BDR usually works only outbound: choosing target accounts, researching them and reaching the right people by cold email, LinkedIn and phone. Companies use the two titles differently, so check the job itself.
The BDR's toolkit
- A clear ideal customer profile and target account list.
- A database or email finder, and verification.
- Sending domains and warmed-up mailboxes.
- A sequence tool, one inbox for replies, and a CRM for deals.
Measured on
Qualified meetings and the pipeline they create, rather than activity counts.
