Domain age

How long ago a domain was registered, and why brand-new domains struggle to reach the inbox.

Domain age is how long ago a domain was registered. It shows in the domain's public registration record (WHOIS or RDAP).

Why it matters for email

Spammers buy domains, use them for a few days and drop them. So a domain registered last week that suddenly sends a lot of email looks exactly like spam, and filters treat very new domains with suspicion until they've built some history.

What to do with a new domain

  • Buy sending domains a few weeks before you need them.
  • Set up the website redirect and authentication straight away.
  • Warm up every mailbox for about two weeks before the first campaign.
  • Start campaigns at a low daily volume and raise it slowly.

Is an old domain always better?

Age helps only if the history is clean. A bought old domain may carry a bad reputation or blocklist history. Check a domain's registration date with the free domain age checker and its record with the blacklist checker.
