The tool

Look up a domain's age

From the registry's public record (RDAP), the modern replacement for WHOIS.

Why domain age matters.

What the result means, and how to fix what it finds.

01

New domains start with no reputation

Inbox providers trust domains with a history of good email. A domain registered last week has none, and sending a lot of email from it quickly looks like a spammer setting up shop. That's why new cold email domains need their mailboxes warmed up for a couple of weeks before campaigns start.

02

Older isn't automatically better

A domain's age helps, but its past matters more. An old domain bought second-hand may carry a spammer's reputation. Check any second-hand domain on blocklists and look at what it used to host before you use it for email.

03

Checking prospects

A company domain registered a few days ago can be a brand-new business, or a trap set up to catch spammers. It's worth a look before you add a fresh domain's addresses to a campaign.

04

Watch the expiry date

If your sending domain expires, your mailboxes stop working and the domain can be bought by someone else. Turn on auto-renew with your registrar, and check that the payment card on file is current.

05

Choosing a sending domain

A good cold email domain looks like your brand, so people recognise it and filters see a normal business. Common patterns are your brand name with a short word added, such as getbrand.com, trybrand.com or brandhq.com. Stick to .com where you can: some newer endings are linked with spam and filtered harder. Avoid hyphens and numbers, which look throwaway. Point each domain's website to your main site, so anyone who checks it lands somewhere real. Register them with privacy protection and auto-renew on, so the details stay private and the domain never lapses mid-campaign. And buy them a few weeks before you need them, so warm-up can start while the rest of the campaign is prepared. Two or three domains are a sensible start for most senders.

What is RDAP?

The modern, structured replacement for WHOIS. Registries publish the same public facts through it: dates, registrar and name servers.

Why is the owner not shown?

Most registrars hide owners' personal details for privacy. The dates and registrar are public.

How old should a sending domain be?

Age matters less than warm-up. Warm new mailboxes for at least two weeks before sending campaigns.
