The tool

Your opt-out details

Needed for one-click unsubscribe.

Footer wording

Email headers

Your sending tool adds these. In mailzy it's one switch in a campaign's settings, and every email in it gets one-click unsubscribe.

List-Unsubscribe: <mailto:unsubscribe@yourcompany.com?subject=unsubscribe>

One-click unsubscribe needs a link, not just an email address.

Footer line

Not relevant? Just reply "no thanks" and I won't follow up.

The rules in short

  • Gmail and Yahoo: one-click unsubscribe for anyone sending 5,000+ a day, honoured within 2 days.
  • US CAN-SPAM: a working opt-out and your postal address in commercial email.
  • EU and UK: a lawful reason to email (usually legitimate interest), and an easy way out.

Unsubscribe, done right.

What the result means, and how to fix what it finds.

01

What the headers do

The List-Unsubscribe header lets email apps show their own unsubscribe button at the top of your email. Gmail, Yahoo and Apple Mail do. One-click unsubscribe (RFC 8058) means pressing it unsubscribes the person straight away, without a form or a login.

02

Who has to use them

Since 2024, Gmail and Yahoo require one-click unsubscribe from anyone sending 5,000 or more emails a day to their users, honoured within two days. Below that it isn't required, but it still helps: a person who can unsubscribe easily doesn't press 'report spam', which hurts you far more.

03

The footer line

Many cold emailers prefer a soft line, such as 'not relevant? Just reply no thanks'. It reads human and gives people a way out. If you send at volume, a clear unsubscribe link is safer. Whatever you choose, honour every opt-out, for good, and never email that person again from any mailbox.

04

The law, in short

In the US, CAN-SPAM requires a working opt-out and your postal address in commercial email. In the EU and UK, GDPR needs a lawful reason to email someone (usually legitimate interest for B2B cold email) and an easy way to object. Rules differ by country, so check those where your prospects are.

05

Replies that mean no

Not everyone uses the link. Many people simply reply 'remove me', 'stop' or 'not interested'. Treat these exactly like an unsubscribe: stop the sequence, add the address to your suppression list and don't email them again from any mailbox. Reply politely if you like, but don't argue or ask why. An angry reply is worth a short apology. Keep one list of opt-outs across all your tools and mailboxes, so someone who opted out of one campaign never hears from another. If you work with a team, make sure everyone knows the list exists and checks it before sending anything new.

Questions before you start.

Ask us on the chat if yours isn't here. A real person answers.

Do I need one-click unsubscribe for cold email?

Gmail and Yahoo require it above 5,000 emails a day. Below that it's still wise: it turns spam reports into quiet unsubscribes.

Can I just use a mailto address?

A mailto works for the basic header, but one-click needs a web link that unsubscribes on a single request.

How fast must I honour opt-outs?

Gmail and Yahoo ask for two days. In practice, stop at once.

Everything for cold email, in one place.
