What the grade looks at.

What the result means, and how to fix what it finds.

01

Length

First cold emails do best under about 100 words. Your reader decides in seconds whether to read on, and a short email respects their time. If you can't say it in 100 words, you're probably saying too many things: one problem, one idea, one question.

02

Reading level

We estimate the school grade needed to read the email comfortably. Aim for 6 to 8: short sentences and everyday words. It isn't about writing down to people; even experts read simple text faster, and a cold email gets a glance, not a study.

03

About them, not you

Count the times you say I, we and our against you and your. Cold emails that talk about the sender's company, product and achievements get ignored. Talk about their situation, the problem they likely have and what changes for them.

04

One easy question

End with one question that's easy to answer in a line, like 'worth a look?' or 'who handles this at {{company}}?'. No questions means no reason to reply; several questions means no clear one to answer. Avoid asking for 30 minutes of their time in a first email.

05

A simple structure that works

Most good cold emails follow the same shape, in four short parts. A first line about them: something specific you noticed, not a compliment. A sentence on the problem you think they have. A sentence on what you do about it, ideally with a result for a company like theirs. And one easy question. That's often under 80 words. Follow-ups should be shorter still and add something new each time, such as a different angle, a short example or a useful link, rather than 'just bumping this up'. Three or four steps over two to three weeks is plenty, and stop when they reply, whatever the reply. Then grade each step here.
